The joy of my life is sharing my passion for music with the next generation. Since 2011, I’ve taught general music, music theory, guitar, piano, music production, and several types of vocal ensembles. In a society that values consumption of art over creation of art, I try to show my students that music is not a magic trick, rather it is a series of skills that can be honed and tuned. I emphasize music literacy in my classroom so students are empowered to become lifelong musicians, not passive consumers. In choir, I have the students nominate and elect officers who are eager to take on leadership roles. Throughout my career, students have earned spots in several district honors choirs, All-State festival choirs, NAfME All-National choirs, and some have even gone on to study music education. At the first-ever Maine ACDA adjudicated festival in 2019, Scarborough Mixed Chorus was rated “Superior with Distinction.”
